I tend to agree with you with regard to the masks colors all being red, but I think people tend to associate the multi-color scheme with the turtles now SO MUCH, that to revert to the comic origins might throw people off even more than the changes that are already apparent here. I could do without the "nostrils", but hey... turtles have nostrils too.
