| 49471 | Hey, Things could be Worse! |
One of the benefits I took full advantage of in 1979 was ignoring all the vocal reactions to Jimmy Carter's predictions of the future facing us in the 1980's. I was a young man with no time to dwell in doom and gloom.

But as usual, "Americathon" tells a story about the future with elements that mesh nicely with the 21st century. Meaning it's an interesting premise that got the timing wrong.

In my opinion, "Americathon" was tripped up by a low budget, television-quality, production that did not meet the standards for theater quality presentation. The plot has a natural focal point - the Telethon. But when the movie gets to the telethon, what should be the high point of the story just looks like hastily thrown together ideas, as if no one ever actually planed the telethon event before production began.

Interesting ideas die when there's no money for quality work, just like Patty Duke as the first woman President of the United States in, "Hail to the Chief", from 1985:

| eddstarr | Sep 11, 2022 | ![]() |

| 49469 | Hey, Things could be Worse! |
My dad has a shirt from that movie. He was an extra in it, but the scene was cut. After my parents told me about the movie I watched it online. All the paralles between today's world and the one in the movie are mentioned in this Cracked article. There are also some mentioned on the movie's wikipeida page.

https://www.cracked.com/blog/5-mediocre-movies-made-awesome-by-real-events

| pikachulover | Sep 08, 2022 | ![]() |

| 49467 | The Andy Griffith Show |
Most people would pick the black-and-white episodes over the colorized episodes, but there's really genuine classics.

There's this one great episode called "Dinner at Eight" that'll really keep you hungry.

Andy has a spaghetti dinner with his friend Goober and after that dinner he ends up having another dinner with Howard and his mother. The funny thing was, Andy wasn't even supposed to come over there for dinner! Of course, Howard and his mother weren't just going to tell him to go home. So Andy ends up having another spaghetti meal! And this is thanks to Goober! He screws things up for Andy by telling him he's invited to Howard's home for dinner. Well, later on when Andy comes home, he gets a call from Helen his girlfriend. She informs Andy that he was supposed to have a dinner with her and his uncle that evening. Sure enough, he goes over there. And by now, I'm sure you know what they had.

You'd have to have a stomach made of iron to tackle that many spaghetti meals.
| Mr Magic | Sep 07, 2022 | ![]() |

| 49465 | The Café |
Thank you guys it's great to have friends, especially when your hometown becomes unrecognizable.

For years the Tidewater region was a strange mix of history, people, customs and traditions. My grandma and her generation enjoyed British tea time with a southern twist. Almost everyone I knew enjoyed sharing stories about the area with all the navy serviceman who were puzzled by some of the weird observances.

I still remember the 1962 NATO Day Celebration Parade through downtown Norfolk.

The North Atlantic Fleet Commaner was waving like a madman from the rear seat of a 1960 Imperial LeBaron hardtop sedan. My mom wanted to know why I got upset by the sight of the NATO Commander and I told her I thought he was being abducted to Great Britain and never to be seen again. (and that car freaked me out too).

| eddstarr | Sep 07, 2022 | ![]() |
| 49464 | The Café |
Hopefully this campus shooter will just give himself up. Unlike other campus shooters in the past.

eddstarr wrote :
There's been a shooting in my hometown of Norfolk, Virginia, near Old Dominion University. A gunman opened fire at a weekend house party. Seven people were shot, two died later in the hospital.

Weekend gun violence is almost routine now across the country. Now smaller cities, like Norfolk, are also experiencing a rise in shootings, just like larger metropolitian areas.

My beloved hometown, the once quirky and strange, Norfolk, Virginia, has become too much like the rest of the country. My enchanted childhood will not be experienced by future kids growing up in the shadow of a US Navy Base and NASA at Langley.

-end quote

| Mr Magic | Sep 06, 2022 | ![]() |
| 49463 | The Café |
i'm.... honestly thankful that i live in dutton, virginia now. chesapeake, newport news, portsmouth, virginia beach, norfolk, all the worst places to live in, while dutton and gloucester have been serene and quiet. i honestly missed this lifestyle from the early 2000s when i lived in gloucester for the first time. no trains waking me up at midnight or early in the morning, no sound of shootings happening every day like it was in those places. edd, if you could ever get the chance to move around here i'd love to visit.
| Benjanime | Sep 06, 2022 | ![]() |
